At 7pm this evening, Watertown’s Public Safety Committee is meeting at 106 Jones Street in Watertown, Wisconsin, to discuss various issues, possibly including an ordinance that would declare pit bulls “vicious” animals and place restrictions on the owners of pit bulls and dogs mixed with pit bulls. This piece of Breed Discrimination Legislation, or BDL, is currently in draft form and can still be amended before it is sent to Watertown’s City Council.
Last week, 49 people addressed the committee about the proposed BSL and the vast majority of those who spoke voiced opposition to placing restrictions on pit bulls and their owners. Even though the agenda for tonight’s meeting does not formally include a discussion of the proposed BDL, the committee will still allow public comments regarding any pending issue during a designated period of time.
If you live in or around Watertown, Wisconsin, and are opposed to BDL, you are encouraged to attend tonight’s meeting and voice your opinion. If the public does not speak up against the proposed ordinance, pit bulls, dogs mixed with pit bulls, and their owners will be forced to endure legalized discrimination regardless of whether a certain dog has a history of passive or aggressive behavior.
Put simply, if members of the public do not voice their individual and collective opposition to this piece of BDL, their neighbors who own pit bulls or dogs mixed with pit bulls will have no choice but to punish their pets for simply being a particular type of animal regardless of their pets’ past behavior.
