St. Francis, a city within Milwaukee County, with a population of 9365 (2010) people has reversed their pit bull ban with a revision to is dangerous animal ordinance. The language in the ordinance was amended on 8-4-2020.  The previous ordinance language included a requirement to register and license all "pit bulls" and treated them as dangerous dogs, required them to be muzzled while on a leash. Owners also had to display a dangerous dog sign in their yard. 
The revised ordinance removes any reference to a specific breed of dog and instead focuses on dangerous dogs of any breed.  
The exact language from the ordinance says: 

(c) No dog shall be deemed "vicious" solely by virtue of its classification within a specific breed(s)

Thanks to the common sense of the City Council in St. Francis, dog owners and residents can enjoy living in a safe, humane community.

Yorkville, a village within Racine County with a population of 3291 (2000) people has reversed their 23 year old pit bull ban with a revision to is dangerous animal ordinance.  The previous ordinance language included a ban on pit bull terriers, American pit bull terriers, Staffordshire bull terriers and American Staffordshire terrers as well as any pit-bull mixes. The revised ordinance removes any reference to a specific breed of dog and instead focuses on dangerous dogs of any breed.

Somerset, a village within St. Croix County with a population of 2635 people has reversed the breed discriminatory language in their village ordinance which deals with exotic and dangerous animals.  Previously, the ordinance specifically singled out "pit bulls' as dangerous animals. The revised ordinance addresses dangerous and aggressive dog behavior in non-breed specific terms.  The new language allows the Village to address a dog that bites regardless of breed. 


Thanks to the common sense of the village board in Somerset, dog owners and residents can enjoy living in a safe, humane community. 

South Milwaukee, a city within Milwaukee County with a population of over 21,000 people has reversed their nearly 30 year ban on pit bulls.  Eric Brooks, Mayor of South Milwaukee, made the following statement in his blog:

​"South Milwaukee no longer bans pit bulls. Instead, we are treating all dogs equally under our tough, but fair, vicious dog ordinance.
The City Council voted to remove the pit bull ban, in place since the 1990s, last week. I support the change, and the rationale for making the decision."  

He later goes on to say: "A vicious dog is a vicious dog. The revised ordinance keeps our community safe, and doesn’t discriminate."

We would also like to note that several members of our organization attended a council meeting and spoke with Mayor Brooks many years ago when he was still an Alderman.  At that time, there wasn't enough support on council for a repeal, but we are very pleased that he remained dedicated to changing the ordinance when he became mayor. 

South Milwaukee is once again a safe and humane community for ALL dogs and dog lovers. 

Hudson, a scenic city near the Wisconsin/Minnesota border, has a population of over 12,000 people. 

A new breed-neutral ordinance that re-defined a dangerous dog and removed breed discriminatory language was introduced in February and approved by City Council in mid-July.

At the July 15 Council meeting the council officially removed all references to breed in their dog ordinance.
Hats off to the elected officials in Hudson for their concern for public safety from all dangerous dogs.  Thank you also, to the residents who worked on this project.
