Intake is down for both dogs and cats vs. the same period last year. This is a good thing. Progressive animal sheltering that saves lives relies on two things: reducing intake and increasing live outcomes.
Cat adoptions are up significantly thanks to hard work by the staff and volunteers to hold adoption events and utilizing an off-site adoption facility (PETCO).
On the other hand, dog adoptions are down from last year. Both cat and dog transfers have also decreased. Cat reclaims are down (lost cats being returned to their owner) but more lost dogs got back home with a big jump in dog reclaims in the month of June.
Overall, there has been a 6.39% decrease in shelter deaths in 2012; with a commendable 22.37% decrease in June. July and August tend to be the busiest months for shelters nationwide.
